Solar Panels and Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme (REBS)

The popularity of solar panels has been enhanced by the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme (REBS) offered by energy retailer Synergy. REBS gives residents with solar panels a chance to make money by feeding excess power back into the grid. Synergy then pays customers for the excess power generated.

Synergy’s REBS contract has several important terms and conditions. Clause 9 is of particular importance to real estate agents selling a property with solar panels:

9.2 Synergy may terminate this contract at any time if any of the following occurs:

9.2.1 subject to clause 9.4, the customer sells or transfers or vacates the premises.

Clause 9.4 relates to owners leasing their premises, who may be able to obtain the consent of Synergy in certain circumstances to transfer the REBS contract to the tenant. However, the owner will still have certain obligations under the REBS contract.More information can be found on Synergy’s website.


Special Septic System or Aerobic Treatment Units (ATUs)

(ATUs) are self contained electrical wastewater (sewage) treatment systems for use on some properties that cannot be connected to the sewerage main. They are designed to receive and treat all household wastewater from the toilet, bathroom, kitchen and laundry.
Points to remember

  • ATU effluent is not suitable for contact or consumption.
  • Don’t dispose of medicines or large quantities of disinfectant down the toilet or sink.
  • ATUs must be serviced every three months by an approved person.
  • Owners are required to have a legal service agreement in place at all times.
  • It is illegal to alter the location or size of the ATU irrigation area without having approval to do so.
